Odd
96.1 FM.
I believe I am correct in thinking this is the Polytech frequency. Now over the years the Polyech radio station has given us some pretty cool stuff to listen to. You may recall Beatles FM or Radio Royale which Si was involved in. But has anyone tuned in lately to hear people reading out the Christchurch telephone directory?
Josh put me onto this tonight, so perhaps I'm coming late to this. But anyway, apparently it occurs around the clock. Every so often a new voice comes on and takes over and reads some more. They give the last names, the initial and their suburb in alphabetical order. There are no breaks. There are no ads. There is just the phone directory, without even the slight usefulness of the actual telephone numbers. Behind me right now someone is making their way through 'P', pronouncing 'Postlethwaite' (as in Pete) as 'postal-weight'. It's sort of hypnotic.
This, I think you'll agree, is pretty weird. And I'm sure there's a story behind it somewhere. But I'll be damned if I know what it is.
Proper blog in pipeline. Bide your time.
