In the end, I think there's actually an important societal function fulfilled in a life of no particular achievement. When the ambitious go-getters and creative geniuses of the world are casting restlessly about themselves for inspiration, where do they look? First to their exemplars, of course; the people they are going to strive to emulate. They are the pull.
But the pull might not be enough. Sometimes they need a push. Enter the good old average! Jeez, look at Steve. Working away 45 hours a week at a dull job he doesn't even like, just to keep his head above water. Slaving away for someone else his whole life. No money and no free time to enjoy it if he had any anyway. No passion. No drive. No extraordinary qualities. Well, I'm not going to end up like him, that's for sure. I'd go insane. I'm destined for more! In fact right, that's it: achievement mode initiated.
You're welcome, achievers! We also do an excellent line as the "before" people in commercials, if you're in need of one.
